 Margins

This project looks at areas on the edgelands of the Manchester conurbation. The images explore places which have an ambiguous identity; not part of the countryside but not what we would call urban either. The project aims to portray these often mundane or unattractive areas in a way which romanticises them in contradiction to their actual reality.

Shattered Coast

A series of images taken in the seaside towns of Usuiso and Toyoma in Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture, Japan; July and August 2011, approx. 5 months after the March 11th tsunami devastated the coastline of Northeastern Japan. The clearup operation was well in progress in this area, leaving large swathes of coastline bleak, empty and devoid of human existence. This left many questions as to what was the future for these areas and many like them.

Twilight Hour

Centred on the time of day between the finishing of the working day and the evening ‘proper’, this is a representation of a time of transience, of movement and rush; but also of things slowing down, of closure, of getting comfortable and settling down for the evening.
